Day 18 – Accidentally, A Great Week for My New Book!

Cozy Up - accidentally

Accidentally, I had a great week promoting my new book, Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry!

Much of my promotions for most of my twelve years in the book business have been accidental—and this week it was for sure!

As a promotional idea, I did a Goodreads Giveaway from December 28 – January 09, 2026. I gave away 100 copies of this book. 736 readers participated in the Giveaway. Because Amazon owns Goodreads, they downloaded the 100 copies without paying for them. Because I have been checking my Dashboard in KDP.com often, where I publish my books, the 100 copies shocked me. So, it took me awhile to figure out the increase in sales of 100 books with no royalties. The good news—that movement of books made Time Measured Out! #1 in three categories:

You might wonder why I would do a Giveaway of so many books? Here’s the stats after the Giveaway on Goodreads: 661 want to read it and 694 added the book to their shelf in Goodreads. It now has a 4.2 rating out 5 there. So I could benefit it in the future.

Because of my excellent coach, Derek Doepker, and coaching group, I entered my book in the possible “BookBub New Release for Less” promotional. I had been warned by Derek any of BookBub’s promotionals are highly sought after and well worth it. I have entered other books in the past and not been selected. This time I was, and it was for January 13, 2026. Yes, it costs a lot, but the results were supposed to offset the cost.

No, the sales did not cover the cost, but the promotion caused an increase in sales. Because of the increase in sales, the book bounced between #1 Best Seller in the Poetry about Love category and #1 New Release in Poetry About Women on January 11. Then on January 12, it stayed #1 Best Seller in about Love and #1 New Release in Poetry About Women and stayed there until on January 14. Then it was Top New Release in Poetry About Love. Amazon algorithms likes all of those identifications, so then they do more organic promoting of that book.

Happily, the promotion increased the sales of the first book in the poetry series, Was It a Dream?: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry. And who know what the long-term results will be.

Accidentally—yes, but I am going to write this formula down for my next book because it seemed to fit together nicely—first a Goodreads Giveaway and second apply for a promotion on BookBub in a timely manner. I’m proud of what happened, even if it was accidental.

I have a hard time with marketing and promoting my books. It costs money; it takes time to do all the work and it needs to be planned out and executed a month ahead of time—and I’d rather be writing! But guess what? I have put together a Marketing Plan for this year, so we’ll see what happens—wish me luck!

Day 15 – Handy & Used Often: Writing Tools I Can’t Live Without!

Writing - handy

Handy writing tools make my life as an author/blogger/poet so much easier. Here’s two I have used for years and one I added in the last few years.

This app has become my go-to for beginning and organizing any writing project because of its power to keep everything in one place. Now, I don’t have to wonder where my files are—they are all in this app.

I really realized its power when I wrote the biography of Marshall Flippo, Just Another Square Dance Caller. I had 258,000 words to start with and so much research and files. This program saved my life! And I continue to use it today.

  • Tailor-made for long writing projects

This program has grown with me and offers amazing beautiful choices today it didn’t have originally. It costs more than some of the other apps in its class, but I feel it’s worth it! As I’m working, I can see a preview to the right of what it will look like in the device selected. And recently they have added beautiful designs for lead pages in a chapter, emojos and so much more.

  • Gorgeous Print Interiors
  • Beautiful Ebooks

1. Download Vellum & install

2. Open – Immediately you have the choice to “Import Word File, so click and import document.

8. SAVE OFTEN

Squoosh logo - handy

When I wrote Coronavirus Reflections: Bitter or Better? in 2021, I had lots of photos because of the topic. I’m a visual learner and I felt the photos helped offset the depth of the emotions we felt with the pandemic. When I published it as an e-book, it’s size was off the map, so after a session with my book coach and group, my book coach asked if I compressed the pictures. No, I had not even thought of it. So I went looking for an app and found Squoosh and have been using it ever since. On top of that, it’s FREE for both Mac and PC.

I use it weekly to compress the beautiful photos I include in my weekly blog. Since 2021, I use it to compress the photos I include in any e-book.

  1. Download the app
  2. Open app
  3. Click and drag photo into app
  4. Immediately it compresses photo, but I usually go Under the Edit menu on the right to the Resize part & select “Preset” on the menu to the right, and resize it by 50% more.
  5. Then to save it, click on the download icon at the bottom of the menu on the right.

That’s it!

Writers need all the support we can get. These three apps have helped me tremendously over the years! Yes, they are handy and make my life so much more sane.

Larda Horner-Miller - handy

Day 11 – A New Year—Here’s My First Book, An Old Friend!

We face a new year, so I want to acquaint or reacquaint you with my first book, This Tumbleweed Landed. Even though I published it eleven years ago, its message is timeless.

In Day 5 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge, I told you the back story of this book. Read it here: https://laradasbooks.com/2026/01/05/day-5-dont-wait/

This Tumbleweed Landed - new year

I wrote This Tumbleweed Landed in 1992 or 1993 in a teacher’s workshop and then it sat on my computer—no really. It sat on a 3 1/2 disk from an older 2E computer. I returned to it after my mom died in 2013. After attending a writing workshop, I added some essays I wrote and published it in 2014, liking what the combination of poetry and prose did. The funny thing—this combination has become by trademark in most of my ten books!

In 2014, my husband, Lin, and I had a delightful day photographing the cover picture. It was a cold March day with the wind blowing as only it came on the prairie in southeastern Colorado. I wanted a picture of a tumbleweed stuck in the fence, so we headed east to our ranch. We took several pictures facing northeast, so I had several to choose from when I selected one for the cover. A serendipitous moment happened when I realized we had Mesa de Maya in the background, a notable volcanic mesa in our area that dates back to 1893.

After I opened that first box of books and sold them, I reordered more, absolutely in shock! When I wrote and published this book, I thought it would sale to local friends and family only because it was about life in my hometown. But interested expanded. Being on Amazon, people easily bought it.

I love all of my ten books, but what made this book special besides being the first I published is a dear friend drew four original drawings for it. Jackie (JR) Gilstrap was the artist. When I asked him to do it, he said yes quickly—no second thought. He captured the thought and emotion of the poems he illustrated, so they add so much to this book. Here they are: https://laradasbooks.com/j-rs-drawings/

In a later book, A Time to Grow Up: A Daughter’s Grief (And Growth) Memoir, I had my niece illustrated that book. The idea came from my collaboration on my first book.

At the beginning of my writing career, I didn’t know to enter books into contests, but I joined the New Mexico Coop which met monthly. There I learned about the New Mexico-Arizona book awards. So, I entered my book in 2016 and became a New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards “Finalist” in one category: Biography (Other). When the banquet came around, Lin and I went all excited, and I was scared. I didn’t win, but the process taught me what to do, and I have followed in continuously. In fact, I have only not entered two of my books in this contest: the last one, Was It a Dream?, because of our move and Is My Truth Universal?: A Woman’s Poetic Odyssey because I use it for promoting this five-book series.

A new year brings so many new things, but I thought revisiting a dear old friend was a great way to start the year.

Larada Horner-Miller - new year
Always be willing to visit an old friend!

Day 8 – Be a Winner in a Goodreads Giveaway!

Time Measured Our! 3D - winner

Be a winner! My new book, Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry is in a Goodreads Giveaway, ending tomorrow, January 9. So, it’s not too late to enter.

Being a generous person, I’m giving away 100 free copies of my new book. It sounded like a great number plus I love giving things away. Also, hopefully I will reviews from this!

So what are my odds on winning? Is it a sure thing or not? So far, 485 people have requested this book, so the stats look pretty good. You could be one of the hundred winners in five. Not bad, huh?

I don’t like wasting my time, so give me the scoop. Award-winning poet Larada Horner-Miller captures life’s profound moments—from 9/11’s harrowing dawn to desert highway adventures in poetry.

The pen knew what Larada Horner-Miller’s heart couldn’t say aloud. Collecting her thoughts on everything from the harrowing dawn of 9/11 to light-filled RV treks across desert highways, she used poetry to capture ordinary breaths suddenly split open with grief, wonder, and grace. And as her forties brought amazing triumphs and shattering sorrows, she translated days spent teaching and coyote-haunted dawns into soul-soothing stanzas.

An award-winning poet with more than seven decades of life and three-dozen sober years behind her, Horner-Miller invites you to her kitchen-table memories—where resilience is brewed as strong as morning coffee and saguaros raise silent hymns beneath an Arizona sky. And as she lays out insightful observations of the world in pensive verse, her deeply felt truths offer up a healing warmth.

Time Measured Out! is a candid and inspiring book of poetry, and the second volume in the Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry series. If you cherish reflective verses, vivid travel vignettes, and bold celebrations of self-reinvention, you’ll adore Larada Horner-Miller’s heartfelt collection.

I released this book December 18, 2025, right before Christmas. I had worked on it since April, but my life took a turn and we moved to Panama. What a life changer! This book went on the back burner for several months because of the move. So, when we got settled in, I worked frantically and got it done: the revisions, the layout and everything because I self-publish!

Time Measured Out! stands as the second book in a five-book poetry series. Was It a Dream? Is book #1 and just received two awards last week. This is a unique series because it dates back to 1986 and contains poems I committed myself not to revise. I wanted you, the reader, to see my growth through the five books and the forty years. Yes, often, I wanted to correct, to revise, to update, but I promised and I have kept my promise!

So, if you missed it earlier, here’s the link to the Goodreads Giveaway! Click the link and maybe be a winner!

I just won two book awards for Was It a Dream?, so I know what it feels like to be a winner! Good Luck!

Sharing raw moments of love, loss, and joy, this memoir-in-verse invites readers to discover their own quiet strengths.
