Reviews:
Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry, Book 2 by Larada Horner-Miller is an intimate poetic memoir that captures four transformative years through reflections on love, travel, faith, teaching, grief, family, and personal resilience.
Organized chronologically from 2000 through 2003, the collection has the immediacy of a private journal while still offering themes that many readers will recognize. Horner-Miller writes with openness and emotional honesty, allowing uncertainty, heartbreak, hope, and spiritual searching to exist side by side. Her recurring use of roads, water, deserts, mountains, homes, and natural landscapes gives the poems a strong sense of place while reflecting her changing inner world.
Some of the collection’s most effective pieces connect deeply personal experiences with wider events, including September 11, war, professional challenges, recovery, and the loss of loved ones. The introductions and photographs add useful context and strengthen the memoir-like quality of the book.
The collection’s main weakness is that several poems rely on repetition or explanation where more concise language might have created greater emotional impact.
Nevertheless, the decision to preserve the poems largely as they were originally written gives the book authenticity and allows readers to witness the author’s growth. Time Measured Out! is a sincere and hopeful collection for readers who value accessible, autobiographical poetry rooted in resilience and reflection.

This poetry collection offers an interesting and engaging look at modern poetry, starting around the year 2000 and moving forward through the author’s creative development over the years. Reading the poems in this chronological way makes it feel less like a random collection and more like a personal journey through time. The poems reflect changing perspectives, moods, and themes, which makes the book especially rewarding to read as a whole. You can clearly see how the author’s voice evolves, while still retaining a consistent emotional core. The modern style feels accessible without being shallow, and many poems invite reflection rather than quick consumption. Overall, this is a thoughtful and well-curated poetry book that works particularly well for readers who enjoy contemporary poetry and like to follow an author’s growth over time.

An emotional outpouring of memory and reflection, Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry by Larada Horner-Miller is a poetic portrait of three transient years and the indelible marks they left behind. Detailing her eager plunge into love and a fresh life of adventure, followed by the painful negotiations of a perennially rocky relationship, this catalogue of experience is both relatable and raw, supported by a free-form storytelling style rife with blunt truths. Through vivid musings on her inner self and the external realities sprawled out before her, this second piece of an ambitious memoir is a poetic journey on multiple levels, welcoming readers into the full spectrum of life’s joy and woe.” Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★½
If I had to select a favorite I would choose the one entitled “Time” as I find myself grappling with a fleeting life. I know that no matter how hard I try, ultimately my time on earth is not dictated by my own choices. Instead, there is a creator that will eventually see that my days are over. How long is that? Well, I am not quite sure but I suppose I will find out soon enough.
The other one that moved me is the piece “War – Prime Time!” as I believe that one of the flaws in modern society is the twenty-four hour news cycle. The sensationalism of our media and the constant need for views is causing us to become more and more addicted to viewing destructive behavior. As wars become more and more public we see the destruction and yet we find ourselves unable to look away.
Overall, this was a wonderful collection of poems that I can see myself revisiting. I know that there are some folks that will not like them or say that they are too simple. I, myself, prefer knowing what the poet meant instead of trying to guess. If you choose this collection, I know you will find a few pieces that resonate with you. It is just the way it is.
