About This Book
How did a young mail carrier from Oklahoma put together a ranch in southeastern Colorado during the depression when others were losing theirs? This delightful booklet tells the story of how my grandfather, Laurence Horner, put our family ranch together in southeastern Colorado during the depressions. Harold Horner, Larada’s dad, begins the tale in Oklahoma and how the young Horner’s ended up in a small ranching community in southeastern Colorado. Harold details the process of how my grandfather bought homestead near each other to build our family ranch. He shares about his family and beginning experience as a rancher. Take a step back in time and witness this family story unfold.
My Comments
I collaborated with Dad and Mom to produce this historical account of how my grandfather put our family ranch together during the depression when others were losing theirs. Dad dictated the story to Mom, then I typed it up on a computer.
In the summer of 1992, I brought home a clunky 2E Apple computer from my classroom to type up this story. Dad, an old cowboy who hated computers, looked over my shoulder and helped edit the book. When he found a section he wanted to add more text, he would motion wildly, saying, “Go back up there,” directing my to scroll up in the document. These editing sessions went on all summer, and I enjoyed every minute.
We wrote and printed this historical chapbook to celebrate her dad’s 75th birthday in 1993—a labor of love. We gifted Dad with a copy and then gave everyone in the family a copy. I printed an extra twenty-five copies and my classes read some stories when I taught in Denver.
Then after I published a couple of books, I wanted it available to the world. Enjoy the Horner story!
