Day 29 – A Picture of Me—On My Wedding Day

One of my favorite pictures of me is on my wedding day, October 22, 2011. The sheer joy shines in my eyes. And here’s the reason why!

My ex-husband and I separated in 2008. We divorced in early 2009. My best girlfriend, Kathi Raver, in square dancing died in November 25, 2009. My ex-husband and I did lots of fun activities with Kathi and her husband, Lin—we went to square dance festivals and dance together. We played games in each other’s homes. Also, we danced weekly at our three club dances.

After the first of the year, Lin called me asking if I would like to dance with him at the three club dances. Because we were friends before, the dancing moved into more of a relationship.

So, we officially started dating in May 2010 and married in 2011. It might appear that we rushed this, but Kathi had said repeatedly to me when my ex and I broke up to get over it—give it six months and go on.

Lin proposed to me on Christmas Day, 2010 in Branson, Colorado in front of my mom and my aunt—what a precious day that was!

Then he spent the year telling everyone at square dance festivals were at all over the country to come to our wedding! He evenly got up on the microphone at some and made the big announcement.

Because of our love for dancing, we got married at the Albuquerque Square Dance Center. My brother and mom gave me away. He had two best men and I had eleven brides’ maids.

Because of our multiple marriages my Episcopal priest couldn’t marry us, so we found someone on the internet, and she did a beautiful job, weaving our story into our vows, even referencing recovery quotes for me.

So, we had a short ceremony and a big dance party afterwards! Three hundred of closest friends attended with some flying in from Florida and Tennessee.

During the ceremony, I read Lin a poem I wrote for the occasion. Here it is:

It’s Here! Our Wedding

October 22, 2011

It's here!

Our life together starts today

The past is behind us
The future looms positively in our view!

I have labored over the words to say to you.
How do I find words to describe what has happened
Between us

There is not a container to hold it

We come from 2 rich, full lives
a small town New Jersey boy and
a country girl from Colorado
Other places, other times
Other husbands, other wives

We arrive here today
From tragedy
The loss of Kathi
Your dear former wife
And My dear friend

We arrive here today
From joy
In our newfound relationship,
Having been friends for years!
I knew you and liked you before
I fell in love with you!

Thank you for proposing to me
On Christmas morning, 2010
In front of Mom and Aunt Willie,
My 92 year old aunt
and
making It official.

When You met My dear Uncle Tanky
After you proposed, he took me aside
And said he's the best!

I agree—I have no doubt.

Many of our friends here today have
Told us that they will be glad when we get married,
So we would stop kissing and hugging each other
All the time!

I will never stop!
Each kiss and each hug heals my soul at a deeper level
I want more!

Lin, to me
You are a cool mountain breeze
Deer stopping by for nourishment & comfort!
You are laughter! Every Wednesday night at
round dancing when you refer to the foxtrot
as the F word, I laugh deeply!

I know that the life we will start today
Is rich
blessed
And oh, so good!

As I look out over
Our family and friends,
I know we have the support
And power to make this marriage
Become a fascinating adventure.

Today we become husband and wife
And some of you may wonder
"why?"
At our age.

Here's my reason—
I wanted to stand today before
My family and friends and God and profess
my love to you.
To me the sacrament of marriage
Has a different value today!
I wanted the protection for us
That marriage offers.

I commit today
To be Larada
Creative, messy, wacky and fun!

I ask you to be Lin.
Creative, neat, linear and goofy!

Together we form a "we"
That's dynamic!

I could site a long list of thank you's today,
but I want to thank you mostly for one thing—
choosing to
Share the rest of your
Life with me! It's here!

After I read this, Lin played, I Cross My Heart, a George Strait song for me—George is my favorite.

The joy on my face in the picture below shows exactly what this day was for me—the best day of my life!

My Thoughts

Day 28 – YouTube Videos: My Poetry Alive!

YouTube videos capture people’s interest, but instead of curating content from outside my world, I’m going to share a couple videos I recorded last year in April during National Poetry Month.

Videos of poetry from Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry

In December, I released the second book in a five-book poetry series, Time Measured Out!: Navigating Life’s Journey Through Poetry. These poems show the variety of topics in the book.

I share my names with my grandmothers, but this poem is about sharing my name with my paternal grandmother. She had a major influence on me, living in the same town.

I love magical realism, but I base this poem on a real experience I had one morning on a walk.

Videos of poetry from Is My Truth Universal?: A Woman’s Poetic Odyssey

This book demonstrates how I maneuvered a poetry class and its requirements, much different than my free verse poetry. This book is permanently FREE, so go and download it:

“The cinquain, also known as a quintain or quintet, is a poem or stanza composed of five lines.”

https://poets.org/glossary/cinquain

“In poetry, a stanza is like a paragraph, and a quatrain is a stanza of exactly four lines, often with an alternating rhyme

pattern.”

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/quatrain

Finally,

I love reading my own words—that’s the reason why I love doing audiobooks. These videos are snippets of me and my words! If they resonate with you, let me know! It’s so rewarding to get feedback.

Day 27 – AutoFiction: Fiction Based on a Part of My Life Story!

Two women talking - AutoFiction

Autofiction really is a genre in the world of books today, but many people have never heard of it. I embraced it before I knew what it was!

Jane Friedman, an expert in the literary world today, tell us:

“Short for autobiographical fiction, autofiction uses elements of autobiography and fiction to examine decisive aspects of the writer’s life. The writer then melds these realities with fictional plot elements, characters and events in a way that often reads like memoir or autobiography. With the lines of fact and fabrication blurred, readers are engaged in wondering what’s real, what isn’t, and how they can figure out which is which.”

https://janefriedman.com/the-how-when-and-why-of-writing-autofiction

In 2016, I joined NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November because I had a story I had to tell. At the time, I didn’t know the name of the genre—I just knew this was the best way for me to tell this. The subject matter stung: my incest story. Also, add to this formula Trump won the election November 8, and I deeply knew from my injured self he was a perpetrator. That ignited my writing back that month, and I ended up with over 50,000 words by the end of November—the word count goal of every writer in NaNoWriMo.

I couldn’t wait to revise this book and get it out in the world. Feeling that I had a message to share on the travesty and the healing possible, I started the work.

Then a book deal fell into my lap to write the biography of the most famous square dance caller in the world, Marshall Flippo, and I couldn’t let it go. Flippo was in his late 80s and dancers clamored for this book, so away I went down that avenue. My autofiction book got pushed to the background!

Nine years later with more intense healing for my incest issues over those years, the Epstein files came front and center. In talking with my therapist, I shared that they were a trigger but not like before. I had moved to action—I wanted to be an advocate for survivors. We brainstormed ideas: a website and the power of it. Then it dawned on me—my book might help someone who survived incest.

So, that’s my next book project even though I just published my second book in a five-book poetry series. I mulled over trying to publish book #3 and the autofiction together. After a conversation with my book coach, Derek Doepker and the group, I realized I have to focus on this book now because of its relevance.

My book is written in two voices: Ellie and Laura. Two women tell their stories back and forth, chapter by chapter. So far, the working title is Eye Witness to Life or Eye Witness to Healing because Ellie, her husband and Laura’s husband all receive healing as they watch Laura go through the grueling discovery and healing of her incest issues.

So, here’s the first scene from this book:

People call me Ellie—my given name is Ellen Marie.

I have been an eye witness to much in my life—losses that ripped my heart a part. I lost three key people within three years in my teenage years.

Dad died in a tragic car accident, then my mom drank herself to death after he died. I pride myself that I stood by my mom during her time of need. I was an eye witness to her death, holding her hand as she drew her last breath. Even as a teenager, death didn’t frighten me. It felt like a privilege to stand at her bed. My sister, Susie, and I shared that poignant moment.

At the same time, my high school sweetheart was killed in a car crash. These losses drove the rest of my life.

The hardest loss of my life happened when I lost a child during a hard pregnancy. I had one child and then had three miscarriages afterwards. I carried the last one for six and a half months and thought my little boy was safe, but not.

Then I stood by while a dear friend took her last breath, dying young at fifty-nine years old of cancer. She had become a surrogate mother for me. The hospice nurse led those of us standing around her bed through the death process, step by step. After that experience, I respected our body’s magnificent system of dying.

Life has been a succession of losses and pain; however, the following scene ripped my heart a part once again and changed my life forever.

I know this is a hard topic but we must be honest about it and share our stories. For too long it has been ignored. Ellie’s friendship plays a big part in the Laura’s subsequent healing and her own. Do you have friends like that? Are you a friend like that?

I have not finished the website yet, if you are interested, email me at larada@icloud.com and I will let you know when it goes live. It will be a safe place to convene, tell our stories and support each other.

Yes, it’s a hard topic, but we need to talk! WE HAVE TO TALK!

My Thoughts

Day 26 – A Typical Day in the Life of Larada—Whew!

Woman knitting - day

A typical day in my life today overflows. From morning to night time, I fill it to the max. I have enjoyed being busy—that hasn’t changed!

My day started at 7:15 AM with the alarm going off. That gave me time to charge my iWatch, put Cequa in my eyes for my severe dry eye condition and do a Netty Nose wash for my sinus issues!

Every morning I try to write my Morning Pages, a suggestion from Julia Cameron in her famous book, The Artist Way. I write three pages in a spiral notebook, and I’m on notebook #193.

When we moved to Panamá we decided to change our lifestyle, so we only have one vehicle. My dear husband got up early to go to the gym to exercise, so I could go to my Zumba class at 8:15 AM.

I started Zumba last week, and I love it. Before the pandemic in 2020, I had done Zumba regularly. I love the dance moves, the Latin music and the fun. The Zumba instructor here is fantastic. Today, the studio wasn’t overflowing like it was last week, so we had more room to move around.

But I forgot to put the lidocaine patch on my leg for the nerve damage, and it has hurt most of the day!

Then I rushed home to eat a late breakfast about 9:45 AM. I grabbed a quick shower and got ready for our next adventure.

The library in Boquete has Chats every Monday for the expat community here on a variety of topics. As I passed the front desk, I picked up my library card I had applied for last week—now I can check out books at the library—yahoooo!

Today we learned about Burial & Cremation here in Panamá. That may sound gruesome, but my husband is 85 and I’m 72, so we’re nearing that part of life that these topics apply to us. The Chat informed us of some major differences here versus the United States, so it was well worth it.

Afterwards, we drove downtown and ate at El Sabrosón, a restaurant we hadn’t eaten at yet. They served cafeteria-style, so I could pick out what I wanted: fish, salad and plantains. What delicious meal! There are about 125 restaurants in Boquete and we want to sample each one!

While we ate, a friend texted me to see if I could loan her a dongle for her Mac computer. I assured her we could bring it over later.

My husband just happened to pick that area of town because it was across the street from his favorite ice cream shop, Saori’s. For dessert, I had a scoop in a cup of maracuya pie, passion fruit!

When we got home, Lin and I watched an episode of Castle, a rerun of the detective show. We’ve gotten hooked on it. Then we both started a nap, and I elevated my leg and iced my foot, but I had scheduled phone call with a recovery friend who lives in California, so I cut off my nap. We had so much fun catching up on our two lives. She moved before we did, so our lives have parallels in getting settling in a new community and make friends and starting over.

After my phone call, Lin and I followed the pin my friend sent me to find her house. Here in Panamá, we have no addresses like in the states. So a pin on a map program is the only way to find someone’s house.

We had a lovely time at their house because it was our first time there. It’s a solar house and quite large for here. She and her partner enjoyed showing us around. I had to cut it short though, because I had to finish the tax preparation for our family ranch.

When we got home, I called a doctor here to set up two appointments for Lin and me so we have a primary care physician here. We will see the doctor on February 9. I’m excited to get that done!

After that, I grabbed my laptop, mouse, mousepad, check register, a pen and highlighter and moved to patio to enjoy the beautiful day and figure out the problem for our ranch account. Somewhere, I had a mistake in the Open-Source bookkeeping app I use because its balance didn’t match my check register. So I looked and looked. I found one major mistake—whew! But I couldn’t find a $200 one.

As I worked at the patio table, my husband busied himself with planting to beautiful plants he bought last week at the Tuesday Market in the front yard near me. When he got to the bougainvillea, he asked my opinion about where to put it. After he showed me his choices, I agreed with one, then he chose another place—that’s the way it goes!

Before eating dinner, I checked email in two accounts. I found a good deal on a promotion for my second book, When Will Papa Get Home? for February. I’m trying to do a better job of organizing my promotions for my books this year, so I’ve identified one per month, then overlapped a couple of them. Going through my email drives me crazy because I got so many spammers offering to do book reviews and they are all spammers! What a waste of time for me!

I had to stop away from the bookkeeping task, so we ate a light dinner of a small slice of cheese, papaya, mango, bananas and prunes. I add the prunes for my stomach. As we ate, we watched another Castle episode.

When I finished eating, I picked up my knitting and almost finished another baby bootie I’m working on. I joined the Boquete Knitters and Quilters group and they give baby and children homemade items to the native people here in need. I love it.

Then I returned to the bookkeeping project and found the $200 mistake. So I sent the paperwork to our CPA. That’s a big load off my mind!

Here I am writing this blog to share a typical day in my life—a retired teacher turned author turned expat who co-owns a ranch. I love my rich full days—how about you? Could you keep up with me?

When I finish this, I still have my Spanish lesson to do on Duolingo. I have 333 consecutive days stacked up!
