Professional Book Covers? A Change for Me!

My four books - professional

Professional book covers? Yes, I changed to professional book covers for three of my last four books, even though I thoroughly enjoyed designing my first four book covers. I still controlled the photos use. See the change.

A Time to Grow Up: A Daughter’s Grief Memoir

A Time to Grow Up: A Daughter's Grief Memoir - professional

I hired a professional book designer from fiverr.com to do the cover. A friend of mine took the picture outside of Branson, my hometown, making sure the mesa behind Branson was captured. I love how a landmark, Saddlerock, appears on the back cover and shows over my left hand.

After he designed the cover, this friend suggested putting Mom and Dad in the clouds. The designer had finished the cover, so I added it, and yes, it looks amateurish. I should have paid him to blend the added graphic into the clouds.

This one may need to be redone!

THE ONE EXCEPTION: Just Another Square Dance Caller: Authorized Biography of Marshall Flippo

I did not hire a professional book cover designer because I knew what I wanted to do with the cover. I had selected the iconic picture of Flippo calling with a live band during the 50s and added the dance floor background. On the back I added snippets of his favorite places to call.

Coronavirus Reflections: Bitter or Better?

As before, I knew my husband, Lin, and I would take the picture. We did two photo shoots in his garden. The first one we struggled with using a stand mirror to get some sort of a reflection, but it didn’t work. So, for the second shoot, Lin suggested I concentrate on a reflective look on my face. We took 100s of pictures and ended up with the one we used.

Also, I selected a picture for the back of the cover that had a bird bath in Lin’s garden with a bird sitting on the edge. Why for a book about the coronavirus?

During the pandemic, we found Spring Watch, Autumn Watch and Winter Watch. We learned that many people around the world became avid gardeners during the forced stay at home. I thought the garden on the cover and the back highlighted this amazing discovery.

I selected the teal background that looked like barn wood to me and you know my country background.

Then I hired 100Covers.com to do the cover, and what a wonderful company to work with! They accommodated my desire to use my two photos and the teal wood background and designed the cover you see.

Hair on Fire: A Heartwarming & Humorous Christmas Memoir

Hair on Fire: A Heartwarming & Humorous Christmas Memoir cover - professional

After such a great experience with Coronavirus Reflections: Bitter or Better?, I returned to 100Covers.com. I went out to a professional photograph site that they work with, and found the Christmas angel but she had a phone in her hands. They aptly replaced the phone with a candle which played a vital part in the poem about my hair and fire.

They provided two options because I had emphasized the poetry in the book to start with, but after talking to my book coach group, I realized there was poetry and prose in the book, so I didn’t want to focus on only the poetry.

In the end, I love the professional book cover they produced.  At holiday fairs last year, many people remarked about how attractive the cover is, and I agree!

Finally, my journey in self-publishing and book cover design has been an adventure. I have eight covers stockpiled with 100cover.com when they had great sales to redo three of my older book covers and for my five books in the queue.

My final decision: professional book covers make a difference!

If you’re an author, do you hire a professional book cover designer or design your own?

Are Goals Powerful?

Goals on an old typewriter

Are goals powerful? Dreams, aspirations! I’ve been a goal-oriented person for most of my life. I’d like to share one experience I had many years ago and then a current one.

In the 90s, I held the position of technology coordinator for Washington middle school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, along with my teaching assignments. Our school realized the importance of networking the building and the future of the internet. We were on the cusp of having a networked school. The internet held the future.

At our end-of-the-year tech committee meeting, we brainstormed our technology needs for the next year. I reminded this hard-working committee the rules of brainstorming (and dreaming big): any idea goes—don’t hold back. The list went on and on. They took me at my word—their vision astonished me! That night I typed up the long list, the list that encompassed all of our hopes and dreams!

We made our tech plan based on this list, our goals for the next year. Then we presented the proposal to our legislators who would fund our technology needs, and. . . We achieved everything on the list that next year!

That lesson stuck in my mind over the years when I faced mountains to climb that seemed unattainable!

So, after joining a book coaching group this year, our coach Derek Doepker, encouraged us to set a goal for our book sales for 2023. Even though I’m a goal-oriented person, I had never done that! Then he added a caveat: expand it by 10.  So, I did, and this was in September or October. Much of 2023 was already gone.

I wrote my goal on a post-it and said it out loud every day. Also, I wrote it on a small board and placed it by my desktop computer to remind me of it. Recently, I have been advertising my new book like crazy—much more than I have ever done before.

Now, here we are twenty-one days until the end of the year! Have I reached my goal? No, not even close! So what do I do?

I decided to share my dilemma with you and maybe you could help! Any of my seven books count towards this goal—e-book, paperback, hardback or audiobook.

Amazon has them all:

You can order paperbacks and hardback from me at my two shops:

So, let’s work together! We have 21 days to reach my goal and you can help me and receive great reading material!

Flippo Wanted a Hardback Version!

Just Another Square Dance Caller: Authorized Biography of Marshall Flippo hardback cover
Hardback cover

Yes, hardback copies! When I was writing Marshall Flippo’s biography, he emphatically wanted a hardback version, so this is how I did it and the state of my supply now of hardbacks!

I had previously published my four books as paperbacks and e-books with kdp.com, an affiliate of Amazon. Originally it was called createspace.com. So far, I have been happy with their copies and production. Before changing to kdp.com, they provided some marketing and editing services I used and liked. They no longer do that.

When Flippo said “I want a hardback version,” I didn’t panic because I had already researched this possibility. IngramSpark.com, another self-publishing site, did hardback copies, so I published Flippo’s biography as a hardback, paperback and e-book with them.

Also, I published a paperback and e-book on kdp.com. That may sound crazy, but look at the price below—it costs me nothing to do it. Both companies offered different market focuses, as seen below. Also, I love having it on Amazon immediately, so I published with kdp.com first, then with IngramSpark.com.

Here’s the difference between kdp.com and IngramSpark.com:

Since this table was creating, Amazon does print a hardback version, but it was after I released Flippo’s biography.

When my first shipment of the hardback version arrived in May 2020, I had a disaster—IngramSpark messed up the covers! They had not centered Flippo’s iconic picture on the front; therefore, everything else on the front and back was off. I chatted with IngramSpark, and they sent me new covers in twenty-four hours. But, I had to fold each cover for each book.

Then I realized it was the way they were folded. I still have to refold or replace the covers for most of them because they haven’t gotten it right!

Yes, I fulfilled Flippo’s request, and he died before I published the book, which broke my heart. He so wanted to read this book about his life and see how I organized it, and I wanted to see the look on his face when he saw the cover and opened it to read about his life. I have a hard copy on my shelf for him I can see daily.

So, the sad part for me is I self-published Flippo’s biography in May 2020 after the pandemic hit. At that point, we did not know how long it would last. The sales had boomed until then because I hadn’t taken pre-orders, but because all the major dance events stopped for a couple years, the tidal wave of enthusiasm has waned for all versions.

A couple years ago when the pandemic seemed to subside, I thought we would host our annual Hot August Night’s dance, so being the optimistic person I am, I bought more copies to sell to those enthusiastic readers I envisioned clamoring for this outstanding book. We canceled the event because fear of COVID still ran high among the dancers because of the proximity of our activity. And I still had all those books.

As a result, I have a storage shed with shelves of over a hundred paperbacks and almost a hundred hardbacks. I thought callers and dance enthusiasts would want a hardback copy to place on their bookshelf along with other great square dance history books because it’s about more than Flippo’s life—it’s the history of square dancing from the mid-1950s to when he completely retired on New Year’s Eve, 2017. He saw so many changes through those years and realized the impact!

This weekend I sold my books at a square dance festival in Albuquerque, NM, where I live, and the attendees were mostly older dancers. Again, I thought I would sell a stack of books—I sold two paperbacks. This makes little sense to me. Yes, I wrote it, but it’s about the most famous square dance caller in the world!

Finally,

This is a brilliant book with lots of marvellous stories about square dancing and Flippo’s life.
